Disposition:(CW: for MDZS spoilers, prostitution, and child abuse.)
❁ Insecure: Meng Yao was born to an educated prostitute mother, Meng Shi, and Jin Guangshan, the rich sect leader of Lanling Jin. Due to his birth, Meng Yao had spent his life being bullied for his blood and class. There were stints in his life he had found himself homeless and even when he was a child their position in the brothel wasn't entirely secure, his mother was ailing but she valued his education above all else.
His life was spent in the search for security. He worked harder than most people, both to make up for his lack of formal education as well as try to gain recognition from his father. He was unafraid to get his hands dirty and just do what needed to be done for any bit of respect and safety. He's been told his life that he was worth nothing and he had something to prove.
To be a cultivator, one must have a solid foundation. They need to form a golden core at a young age. And that requires having some privilege. At the age he is now, he may never develop one.
He tends to have a sense of skittishness when he interacts with new people, in his experience if you placate someone enough they are less likely to hurt you.
❁ Resentful: It’s hard being the bastard son of the richest Sect leader! He even shared the same birthday as the legitimate child. While Meng Yao grew up under duress his brother lived exalted like a prince. That is enough to make anyone resentful. Since birth, he had simmering anger and resentment burning just underneath the surface.
This isn't apparent usually, he holds a very amicable and submissive demeanor outwardly, however, he utilized this resentment to climb later in life, and the shadows of it can be seen even at this young age. He is prone to swallowing it down and make himself smaller than lashing out. This comes to a head soon in his canon where he murders his superior officer in the Jin clan in cold blood. He was tired of being in a position that no matter how hard he worked the officer would steal credit and that in turn trapped him from ever proving himself. He decided to spy on the opposing side and to bring down the Sect leader himself and end the war in a feat to make his father see him.
❁ Problem-Solving: Meng Yao is a highly intelligent (described as a rare genius), organized, resourceful, hardworking, and ambitious young man. He has an eidetic memory and can talk his way out of situations with great ease. His mind works fast and he is not afraid to take creative solutions to difficult problems.
His mother had educated him in reading, writing, and mathematics and he is a fantastic administrator, so much so that when he left the Nie, Nie Mingjue had a hard time finding a suitable replacement.
❁ Resilient: Even at this age Meng Yao has a high resilience. At thirteen or fourteen he was kicked down the stairs of the brothel by a disgruntled client. He suffered a concussion. At fifteen after his mother's death, he went to find his father, to ask to be recognized. Instead, he got kicked down several flights of high stairs and, even after falling from such a great height, he still stood up and bowed to his father properly before hobbling off.
This comes from a high sense of self-preservation often taking on extreme measures to survive. An example of this is him trying to hide his crimes later in canon, making himself seem smaller and more pathetic, in order to come out with his life. Even going as far as stabbing himself through, purposefully missing vital organs, with his own sword to fake out someone who had caught him redhanded.
❁ Filial: Meng Yao holds his mother more precious and sacred above all else. He even built a temple for her, when he had become sect leader of the Lanling Jin.
At this age, it had only been a few years since he had lost her, the loss is still pretty raw for him. Her last wish was that he go to his father and be a good filial child to him. He took this to the extreme when he finally got recognition to do whatever crime his father wanted of him no matter what. The seeds of his filial nature can be seen even now.
❁ Under Pressure: He works well under pressure, making snap judgments in order to save himself or rescue another. During the Sunshot Campaign, he saved Lan Xichen as he fled from the Wen cultivators. His silver tongue, memory, and acting skills made him the perfect spy.
Suitability:
Meng Yao is a character who has great potential, complex emotions, and layers of compartmentalization. His homeworld is similar and deals with Chinese mythology, Taoist magic, and supernatural elements, so he certainly is no stranger to ghosts, monsters, demons, and fierce corpses. He has to contend with fierce corpses and supernatural elements, a bit less than the full cultivators in his world, but it is still a reality that he has to contend with.
In Noctium, he would have the chance to practice magic (cultivation) that does not require a golden core, and he would be eager to learn anything that would help him gain the education that he has missed out on earlier in life. I am very interested to see what choices he would make at this pivotal age if all the terrible things like classism in his environment were no longer something he had to contend with.
Meng Yao would be nervous but would marvel at the technology. The transformations that would be new to him. Perhaps at first, he would worry that he was taken over by a demon or a Yao Guai, but he usually adapts quickly to new environments and situations, probably researching the rules of this new place. He may aim to try and be helpful in whatever capacity that he can. He is not the type who can sit still for long and has an interest in administration and organizing. He can be a little bit of a busy body as well.
He may be a bit slow at first with sexual bonding because he does have some hangups related to sex, being raised in a brothel. But Meng Yao is also very touch starved and would probably be happy to the more tactile contact, if terribly shy. It is good for him to make connections and learn and grow from them. As of his canon point, he only has one friend and is loyal to the Nies for taking him in and promoting him. Once he is comfortable with having partners and building bonds he will be better with Synchrony and gaining Manna.
From the TDM he is fond of asking questions and approaching people, he finds most people kind and helpful and is already settling into the new environment with curiosity. He does still worry about his sect leader and his friend in the war but was assured it will be fine back there.
Condition upon arrival: A perfectly healthy if a bit confused, eighteen-year-old man.
Abilities:
❁ Eidetic Memory: Meng Yao has an eidetic memory. It is mentioned that once meeting a person he never forgets his face. He is also capable of remembering their name, likes, dislikes, and more. This memory is a double edge sword. He can learn things quickly but he also remembers pain intensely. He uses this to his advantage both in learning new skills quickly and easily as well as using his memory of people's like to endear himself to others.
❁ Swordsmanship: He has never had any formal training in this but has been given a Nie sword as a guest cultivator. Most of what Meng Yao knows is what he learned on the battlefield and his fighting style is a mix of whatever styles he had seen, memorized, and practiced himself. He is very good at picking up things quickly. He is very much self-taught and would rather use underhanded means in fighting if it meant his survival.
❁ Household tasks: He is very good at household chores, from cooking and cleaning, organizing, and just being able to care for a place. Much of the work he did as a child involved serving food to clients and taking care of cooking, as well as keeping things clean and organized. He sometimes ended up caring for the babies that were born in the brothels as well since he was shown to be a natural at calming babies in the audio drama.
❁ Administration: Meng Yao has a love for organization, mathematics, administration as well as bookkeeping. His life is so chaotic that he finds solace in organization and numbers. Later in life, he will also have a love for public works projects, working on solutions that will benefit a great number of people efficiently.
❁ Acting: He is a fantastic actor naturally who can go from calm to frenzied with ease. This is mostly used as a defense mechanism to keep himself safe. At this canon point, he wouldn't need to use it unless he was trying to get out of trouble.
❁ Silver-tongue: Meng Yao is a natural orator who can talk around people in circles, persuade them to see his side of things, or distract an opponent. This came in very handy when he becomes a spy later.

Gembond: RUBY (probably a Kitsune form to start, since he is drawn with a lot of fox motifs.) Ruby will also help him unleash some of his pent-up rages in a hopefully healthier way than he does usually, which is to repress it.
Gem Location: On the forehead, just above his brows. It is the size of a quarter and mimics the placement of the vermillion mark that the members of the Lanling Jin receive.
