NAME: Guangyao Jin (Yao Meng)
CANON: Modaozushi (Novel)
CANON POINT: After his death. Novel Chapter 108
BACKGROUND: here
SUITABILITY:
Jin Guangyao is a character who has a questionable moral compass, complex emotions, and layers of compartmentalization. His homeworld is similar and deals with Chinese mythology, magic, and supernatural elements, so he certainly is no stranger to ghosts, monsters, demons, and fierce corpses. The nature of this world with its various youkai is similar and different enough to his own to be very interesting. Having Guangyao in a situation where there is a youkai possessing him and being able to not only see but influence all aspects of his mind would be difficult for him to fully come to terms with.
He is the type of person who exudes an immense amount of control, not only on his actions but his outward expressions as well. He is an excellent actor who can go from looking pitiable one moment to malicious the next. I want to explore what would happen as things grow more and more out of his control and to see what type of decisions he would make here.
He is adaptable as well so he will do his best to learn and do as much as he can in order to survive. He wouldn’t have much of an issue doing morally questionable things even if it is something that goes against his values if it ensures his survival or his ambitions. He is a man who was born the son of a prostitute and climbed up to the position of Chief Cultivator with his own resourcefulness (and some blood on his hands along the way).
QUESTIONNAIRE:
● Your character finds an injured Okami deep in the woods. Its leg is broken, trapped under a fallen tree, but it’s clearly in good health otherwise. They know this type of youkai is able to discern the morality of their past actions and can turn hostile to them based on that judgment. What do they do?
He would certainly hesitate and mentally weigh the options, first. Ultimately he would choose to help the Okami despite the possibility of getting attacked. He seems to have a soft spot for creatures that are trapped in vulnerable situations since it is a relatable scenario to him.
Guangyao knows he’s done all the bad things that can be done, but there is always the hope that he did good things as well. He had tried to do what he could to help the common people. His main achievement when he was Chief Cultivator was to install a set of lookout towers throughout the lands which were rung when fierce corpses or other monsters attacked. Because of this. if a remote village was attacked there would be a higher chance that either clan or rogue cultivators could assist. This had canonically been a policy that had saved more lives than any policy the Cultivation clans had previously.
He would help the Okami, and deal with the attack if it happened. After all, one never knows when a favor needs to be returned.
● Your character's worst enemy asks to meet alone by moonlight in a remote location, to discuss temporarily banding together against a larger threat. How do they respond to the invitation?
Guangyao would absolutely meet them. He’s been in situations where he had to spy and get really close to his worst enemies, so it isn’t something he is afraid of. However, he would take multiple precautions as well as contingency precautions and probably have some weapons hidden on his person just in case it is a trap. If there is a greater advantage to be gained from a temporary alliance he would acquiesce as long as he was benefited by the deal.
● Your character has the option to lead a rampaging oni away from path where it would find and attack a lone, inhabited farmhouse. However, the only road they can distract it down leads to the city, where it will inevitably do more damage. What do they choose to do?
He would choose the farmhouse over the city and try to mitigate as much of the damage as possible. In the end, it is better for one farmhouse to be destroyed with fewer deaths involved than a rampage in the city and multiple deaths. He’s pretty used to making such decisions and usually errs towards the thought of the deaths of a few to the benefit of many.
● A shrine of a powerful god offers your character a unique boon crafted to overcome the biggest challenge they’re currently facing. In return, it only asks to be able to possess your character for a 24 hour span of its choosing, which they will not necessarily get warning for. How do they feel about the exchange, and more importantly, do they accept it?
Guangyao would absolutely decline. Even if the boon would take him out of his current struggles, giving up control of himself to an entity especially unannounced is not something he could handle happily.
He is already facing that issue the youkai that is inhabiting him currently. Guangyao is the type of person who likes to be in control of every single one of his own actions and whatever his struggles were he had always adapted to be able to handle them with his own resourcefulness.
He is also farsighted enough to know a boon for a short-term solution may become a problem down the line.
YOUKAI: Kitsune. Jin Guangyao has a personality that would work well with a Kitsune, especially his acting skills and silver tongue abilities.
INVENTORY:
Hensheng. Its spiritual powers are locked so it's just a regular soft sword.
A Guqin None of the Lan spiritual techniques he had picked up will work. It is currently just a musical instrument.
A small case of several sharp Guqin strings. (Just in case he needed to hide a weapon to garrote someone with if he found himself in a tight spot.)
A jar of vermillion paint and a brush.
